On uniforms, equipment and training matters – D'afers sobre uniformes, equipament i instruccions.

As you may have seen in the last post about the Generalitat Infantry Regiment, the Catalan uniforms not only resemble but are identical to British uniforms of the mid XVIIIth century times. That is on purpose. After the War for Independence, a strong British influence was common in Catalàunia. Catalan units had already been training and fighting following British styles, platoon firing for example, in the War for Independence, and were also equipped with loads of British accoutrements, weapons and pieces of equipment. In later times, Catalan strategic interests were in line with British ones, eager as Catalans were to shake any chance to be retained or regained by a foreign yoke and to fend off any possible influence by their big neighbours, France and Spain. They formed a natural alliance with Britain, Portugal and the Netherlands, and willingly looked for a look distinct to that of their neighbours and which still remembered these same neighbours of which were the Catalan allegiances and where did their friendships lay. And also incidentally what could mean to mess with Catalàunia.

Also, The dire need for a naval branch of the armed forces which could both fence off piracy and keep a measure of independence of action against any potential threat called for an invigorated interest in the British navy, which was seen as professional and capable. More of it, the resulting situation put the Catalans as natural British allies, and not only that but staunch ones too. And obviously, the Catalan claims to sovereignty over (or comparted with) the Balearic Isles needed to be founded in practicality on a capable enough navy and that again called for both cooperation with the British and the rising and keeping of a similarly professional and able navy.

Finally, the main commercial interests of Catalàunia laid directly in Britain and the Netherlands and also now in the Americas. It had been so since the late XVIIth century. The spirits and wine northern European markets were very participated by the Catalan merchants and these were the beachhead for other Catalan made products like finished textiles, fine weapons and others. The final, particular triumph in the War for Independence had kept these interests alive and had augmented them. Also Catalans were able now to circumvent former limitations in commerce with the Americas which were imposed on them by former Spanish monarchs. Now the enterprising Catalan merchants were capable to deal with the Americas directly or by way of British and Dutch intermediaries and the Catalan economy had experienced a correspondent growing by which Catalàunia was justly nicknamed as the Mediterranean Holland.

All in all, not only were Catalans strategically interested in a number of ways to share views with Britain but also keen to share military experiences with a nation which like Catalàunia itself had to rely in a comparatively small and so a professional and stout army and a powerful navy too. To this the Catalans copied even the uniforms and, to their possibilities, the ways to remain free both militarily and economically.

On military matters - D'afers militars.

After the War for Independence, an Academy of War was founded which, directed by the Councillor of War of the Generalitat, was to keep a standing army and train its cadres. An Institute of Ordnance and an Academy for the Navy, both merchant and war, were also founded. The latter was directed by the Councillor of the Navy (from the Generalitat too) while a Mestre (master) of Ordnance was in charge of the former, chosen by the Councillor of War.

The standing army was reduced to a Guards regiment and six more line infantry regiments, three light infantry regiments, one of heavy cavalry, three of dragoons and two of hussars. Their names and uniform colours and facings followed closely the ones worn by these units in the War for Independence, although religious references were kept only informally and their official names followed assigned numbers and Colonels.

The Guards regiment was made up wholly with Granaders (grenadiers) and named after the institution it was to protect and serve, the Generalitat. Its six companies were always posted in watch duties in centers of government and key fortresses and cities. Next came the line infantry regiments, also of six companies, one of these of Granaders and the rest of Fusellers (fusileers, the name for other nation's musketeers in the Catalan army, which had no different fusileers units). Then there were three regiments of Fusellers de Muntanya (mountain fusileers, light infantry), one of this dressed and equipped like Austrian Croats.

Catalan regiments have been until now one battalion strong, with six companies each, one of these of Granaders and the rest of Fusellers. In battle, Granaders from different units can form converged grenadier battalions. Modern times have seen the Master of Infantry ask repeatedly for an increment of the armed forces, which has been granted by the newly appointed Minister of War, maybe to compensate for the upgrading of the cavalry role (see below).

The cavalry had one regiment of Cuirassers (cuirassiers, the Catalan heavy horse), three of conventional Dragons (dragoons, medium cavalry) and two of Hússars (hussars). All these units were small by standards and were to be trained in a supporting role they despised. The cavalry staff always asked for improvement on their battlefield role and this was achieved with the coming of the actual Minister of War, close acquitance of the Mestre de Cavalleria (master of cavalry), although the infantry has not lost its preponderance.

The artillery is specialized in defense, both coastal and of land fortifications. The difficult geography of the country calls for quick manouvering and sieges and so artillery tends to be less mobile and heavier. The field artillery is a small branch and contributes with small contingents to Catalan field armies, but is well trained and professional, having served in most cases for some time as ship gunners. Catalan ships on the other side tend to be full of guns; the nature of the Catalan navy is one of coastal defense and so its few ships of the line are heavy and sport a lot of firepower, in contrast with a lot of smaller warships fast enough to keep with corsairs and protect merchant ships (which in turn usually are well armed enough as to fend off pirates).

All in all every arm of the military and navy share a strong esprit de corps among their ranks and a sense of professionality and capability that makes up for their not high numbers. A fierce, sometimes ruthless attittude is also common and, if not well looked on by the high command, at least it is tolerated as a low inconvenience for a stern and aggressive behaviour in battle. Militia units on the other side are untested and matters of try and see, able both of outstanding deeds of bravery (like those of the Barcinonan Coronela back in the War for Independence) or of wavering indecision. Catalan marines and sailors are also brave people, used to the periodic clashing with Barbary pirates.

On Government - Del Govern.

It has been already said here that Catalàunia is a republic and of course no monarch is its head of state. The government resides in the General Deputation, also known as the Generalitat. A Deputy Principal acts as head of state and another deputy, the Conseller Primer or Prime (or First) Councillor, as head of government. Both are elective. There are five deputies-councillors who act as ministers of Afers del País (country, internal affairs), Afers Diplomàtics (diplomacy, external affairs), Afers del Tresor (treasure, finances affairs), Afers de la Marina (naval affairs) and Afers de la Guerra (war affairs) and six deputies more who act as Oïdors (literally, listeners) and have an auditing capacity over their respective ministries (including the prime counselor). A fourteenth member of the government, with no adjunt Oïdor, is the Secretary of State, who acts as a supervisor to the whole government and assessor to the Deputy Principal and substitutes that position if necessary.

All these deputies are elected by the Corts (courts), an assembly of the three Braços (representatives from the nobility, clergy and municipal arms or branches) from which they come from, two deputies from each branch, with the actual government. This assembly has legislative capacity and the voting of laws take precedence over the concession of taxes and subsidies to the government. Of course the imposition of any tax has to be preceded by a convocation of Courts where subsidies can too be petitioned in form of (normally) low interest loans.

The Generalitat is the executive arm of the government and also nominates the members of the Audiència General (the old, reconverted Audiència Reial, the judicial arm). Then the members of the Audiència elect their own representatives and president.

The Veguers (sheriffs) are government representatives in charge of Vegueries, territorial divisions which follow ancient traditions but were streamlined after the War for Independence. The Batlles are the majors of towns, cities and smaller municipalities which congregate into Universitats (universities, an administrative unit).
Batlles and Veguers can call for the Sometent, the militia, which acts as a police force in rural areas and is made up by the local inhabitants. In urban centers, the Coronela or urban militia has that role, with a standing minimal force supplemented by the gremial insitutions.

In Barcinona, the Consell de Cent (a municipal corporation which rivals the Generalitat in the Catalan capital) rules the city, with its own assembly and government organs. It rules also the potentially huge Barcinonan Coronela, which had a crucial role in resisting the Bourbon siege and assaults in the War for Independence.

By the name of the country - Pel nom del país.

The afternoon sun declined towards the horizon as the evening slowly overran the day, the last light of day pulling out golden reflections of the ochre facade of the magnificent building that housed the Academy of Good Letters. The great door opened and out came a man of middle age, wearing a brown coat and breeches of velvet of a darker shade of the same color. Turning towards the inside, made a salute with his hand and started to walk swiftly downwards to the street. Arnau de Cardona was an enlightened man, expert in several matters, who frequented the house to debate with other scholars about whatever.

That afternoon they had talked about origins. They had did so for all that Wednesday afternoon, as they had done so in the morning, speaking specifically of the origin of the name of their nation: Catalaunia. Since it was founded a dozen years ago, the Academy had seen between its walls a whole host of scholars and know-it-alls talking about and settling all kinds of things. Since that day, now distant about twenty years, when the end of the war brought the power to govern their own destiny, the most incisive minds in the country, and others which were not so, had assumed the task of returning it to prosperity after the arduous conflict and make of it an important crucible of culture.

The form of government adopted by the state, the republic, was the one which was more easily and better suited to the country's institutions and the people who were ruled and governed by them. The powerful middle class and the intense commercial activity of before the war had recovered and had got even more impulse. The state was now led by its citizens, a fact which had a multiplier effect on the activity of those same citizens. A side effect of becoming a fully independent nation, which did not share even its head of state with another, was the emergence of a stream of patriotic assertion that wanted to recover the memory of the country to strengthen the identification of its citizenship with the nation.

One of the investigations that had been done sought to ascertain the original meaning of the word which what used to name the country: Catalaunia. After several researching, a meeting was convened where the results would be made public. Arnau de Cardona had been invited, and now came out of it, quite satisfied. Some interesting hypotheses had been explained, and finally had come to conclusions.

On one hand, there were those who argued that the name descended from the ancient name of the territory that was the origin of the Visigothic kingdom and later reconquered tp the Muslims in the times of the Carolingian monarchs, the Mark of Gòtia: Gotholònia. Moreover, a large group felt that the name was derived from the characteristic abundance of castles and administrators of these (castlans) in a border land like Catalàunia. But most surprising was the final speech, vehemently defended, which said that the name was the result of consideration of the country as a land of the righteous or land of the pure.

The legend went that Mary Magdalene, who could have been the wife of Jesus of Nazareth, had landed with her family on the northern shores of the country. It had to be understood that, in times past, the country extended their territories further north than in the present times. So the wife and children of Jesus Christ should be established in those lands, as his followers did. The Greek word Katharos that means pure, would have been used to designate the land and its inhabitants. It was not surprising that much later the Cathars took this name also. And so the land known as Katharoilònia, or similar, would have ended deriving in the name Catalàunia. It was agreed that, for its implications, this could be problematic as a name, fact that later would have caused its association with a supposed Gothic origin.

All in all, quite interesting in view of Arnau de Cardona, who, while jamming on his tricorne hat and wrapping up himself with his cloak against the incipient cold autumn, was thinking that he had to meet up with a military officer with whom he had to have dinner that same night, one that would put him up with the difficult situation in the northwest part of the border where he had to be escorted to by the following week. A mission was waiting there, and one related to some strange way he had heard that afternoon at the Academy of Letters.

Havien aparegut hipòtesis interessants, i finalment havien arribat a unes conclusions.
