New ordinance on flags and uniforms– Nova Ordenança sobre banderes i uniformes.

It has come to public attention that after lengthy (rest) study and deliberation, a specially appointed commission has issued a new ordinance on flags and uniforms for the Army of Catalàunia. This has been done to further characterise the army and both to standardize uniformity and reduce its costs.

Instead of the old colourful variation of uniforms, facings and small clothes which was characteristic of the times of the War for Independence and immediately later conflicts, the Army will now dress in red or grey uniforms and small clothes, with varied facings , except for the light infantry which will be clad in brown uniforms and small clothes.

Flags have been standardized too so now, while the Colonel's Colours stand the same, the Regimental Colours will be in facing colour background with the national devices and the regimental number, no other devices at all. Light Infantry Regimentals will have the national devices over a facing coloured cross, all over a black background.

You can see the resulting flags and uniforms in their corresponding page, although the update for each unit will be posted in this main page for your convenience.

The 8th Line Infantry Regiment - El 8è. Regiment d'Infanteria de Línia.

The eigth Regiment of Line Infantry is made up by the standard number of six companies, all of them of grenadiers status although not being officially so but fusileers instead. Their companies won't converge with other unit's grenadiers but the whole unit will act in such special cases such as storming enemy fortifications or spearhead a charge into enemy lines as proper grenadiers.

The regiment was created in modern times as the relationship between the free Principality of Catalàunia and the United Kingdom grew closer by the day. Catalàunia became a preferred spot for touring and the variety of climates and fairness of weather only added to its historical interest and diplomatic proximity. Also it became a close place to scape to for some elements which would be prosecuted in British soil, unless charged of high treason. Such was the only question an specially appointed administrative official would ever ask from the British embassy, once in a month, to have an updated account.

The unit was thought to reunite all British and Irish people who willingly could start anew forgetting about their past. Administrative officials representing the authorities would then let them put a generic mark of their likes into their admission warranty and put the names they gave. New documents were made for these recruits which only specified they were of British descent. Since then, the regiment has kept with tradition and recruits from British and Irish volunteers who either choose the said entry or give their actual names and places of origin.

Although having been officially named as the 8th Line Infantry Regiment, the unit is referred at by their officious designation of British Guards Infantry. Its deployment is like other units' being based in different places around the country and alternating its deployment periodically with that of other units, although it is intended to keep the regiment divided into as few subunits as possible. Usually they are posted in major cities where local militias and police forces can exert a good measure of control as members of the regiment are quarrelsome, being of different national and religious origin and having differing previous allegiances. Its uniform colour and facings are the same as when founded. The cut of the uniforms follow the British pattern for Scottish Highlander units.

As every other infantry unit in the Catalan army, the 8th Line Infantry Regiment is one battalion strong. There is no provision for a second battalion.

You can see the uniform and colours below.

Eren fets nous documents per a aquests reclutes on només s'especificava què eren d'ascendència britànica.

Army units VII – Unitats de l'exèrcit VII.

The 7th Line Infantry Regiment - El 7è. Regiment d'Infanteria de Línia.

The seventh Regiment of Line Infantry is made up by the standard number of six companies, one of them of grenadiers and the other five being fusileer companies. The grenadiers company can converge with other unit's grenadiers for special cases such as storming enemy fortifications or spearhead a charge into enemy lines. In such a case, the officers commanding the converged unit are to be the senior ones.

The regiment was first created as the Our Lady of the Forsaken regiment back in the War for Independence, in the batch of army units which were created after the decision by the Catalan government to resist against all odds for the last year of the campaign, when Catalàunia stood by its own, alone and abandoned by her allies, for more than a year. Then it was an unit thought to reunite all Valencian soldiers and commanders who still fought for the liberation of their home country and were faithful to the Catalan cause. Since then, the regiment still recruits from Valencian exiles but its majority is made up of Catalans from the Principality itself.

Although having been officially renamed as the 7th Line Infantry Regiment, the unit is still referred at, officiously, by its old name, as is costumary in the army of Catalàunia. Its deployment and recruitment are like other units' being based in different places around the country and alternating its deployment periodically with that of other units. Its uniform colour and facings are the same as those at its foundation times. The cut of the uniforms follow the Catalan standard which is modelled very closely on the British patterns.

As every other infantry unit in the Catalan army, the 7th Line Infantry Regiment is one battalion strong. There is a provision for a second battalion, of identical composition, to be formed only in the coming of war and then only by the specific consent and mandate of the Generalitat government. Its members would then be coming straight from standard recruitment.

You can see the uniform and colours below.

Then it was an unit thought to reunite all german soldiers and commanders who rejected evacuation and stayed faithful to the Catalan cause.

The 2nd Line Infantry Regiment. El 2on. Regiment d'Infanteria de Línia.

The second Regiment of Line Infantry is made up by the standard number of six companies, one of them of grenadiers and the other five being fusileer companies. The grenadiers company can converge with other unit's grenadiers for special cases such as storming enemy fortifications or spearhead a charge into enemy lines. In such a case, the officers commanding the converged unit are to be the senior ones.

The regiment was first created as the City of Barcelona regiment back in the War for Independence, being one of the oldest units in the army. Although having been officially renamed as the 2nd Line Infantry Regiment, the unit is still referred at, officiously, by its old name, as is costumary in the army of Catalàunia. Its deployment and recruitment are like other units' being based in defferent places around the country and alternating its deployment periodically with that of other units. Its red uniform colour is the same as in its foundation times, having changed facings to a buff colour instead of yellow. The cut of the uniforms follow the Catalan standard which is modelled very closely on the British patterns.

As every other infantry unit in the Catalan army, the 2nd Line Infantry Regiment is one battalion strong. There is a provision for a second battalion, of identical composition, to be formed only in the coming of war and then only by the specific consent and mandate of the Generalitat government. Its members would then be coming straight from standard recruitment.

You can see the uniform and colours below.

On uniforms, equipment and training matters – D'afers sobre uniformes, equipament i instruccions.

As you may have seen in the last post about the Generalitat Infantry Regiment, the Catalan uniforms not only resemble but are identical to British uniforms of the mid XVIIIth century times. That is on purpose. After the War for Independence, a strong British influence was common in Catalàunia. Catalan units had already been training and fighting following British styles, platoon firing for example, in the War for Independence, and were also equipped with loads of British accoutrements, weapons and pieces of equipment. In later times, Catalan strategic interests were in line with British ones, eager as Catalans were to shake any chance to be retained or regained by a foreign yoke and to fend off any possible influence by their big neighbours, France and Spain. They formed a natural alliance with Britain, Portugal and the Netherlands, and willingly looked for a look distinct to that of their neighbours and which still remembered these same neighbours of which were the Catalan allegiances and where did their friendships lay. And also incidentally what could mean to mess with Catalàunia.

Also, The dire need for a naval branch of the armed forces which could both fence off piracy and keep a measure of independence of action against any potential threat called for an invigorated interest in the British navy, which was seen as professional and capable. More of it, the resulting situation put the Catalans as natural British allies, and not only that but staunch ones too. And obviously, the Catalan claims to sovereignty over (or comparted with) the Balearic Isles needed to be founded in practicality on a capable enough navy and that again called for both cooperation with the British and the rising and keeping of a similarly professional and able navy.

Finally, the main commercial interests of Catalàunia laid directly in Britain and the Netherlands and also now in the Americas. It had been so since the late XVIIth century. The spirits and wine northern European markets were very participated by the Catalan merchants and these were the beachhead for other Catalan made products like finished textiles, fine weapons and others. The final, particular triumph in the War for Independence had kept these interests alive and had augmented them. Also Catalans were able now to circumvent former limitations in commerce with the Americas which were imposed on them by former Spanish monarchs. Now the enterprising Catalan merchants were capable to deal with the Americas directly or by way of British and Dutch intermediaries and the Catalan economy had experienced a correspondent growing by which Catalàunia was justly nicknamed as the Mediterranean Holland.

All in all, not only were Catalans strategically interested in a number of ways to share views with Britain but also keen to share military experiences with a nation which like Catalàunia itself had to rely in a comparatively small and so a professional and stout army and a powerful navy too. To this the Catalans copied even the uniforms and, to their possibilities, the ways to remain free both militarily and economically.

The Generalitat Grenadier Guards Regiment. El Regiment de Guàrdies Granaders de la Generalitat.

The first Regiment of Infantry is made up entirely of grenadiers and is considered as the senior and only Guard unit of the army. Its six companies are of course grenadier companies, and one of them acts as permanent protectors of the Catalan government guarding its installations and patrolling the place the government is at at any moment. This role is shared by all companies, taking seasonal turns.

There is no senior company and so companies also take turns to share the Colonel's colours which in other regiments are taken by the first, senior company. In battle, the unit does not converge with other unit's grenadiers but those just join the regiment for a given time and then return to their parent units. For that time, those grenadiers are to obey the first regiment's officers.

The regiment was first created as the Generalitat regiment back in the War for Independence and has kept its name since then, being the only unit to do so. Its uniforms colours and facings are also the same, only changing the cut of the uniforms. Members of the regiment participated in many heroic actions of war, both in the siege of Barcinona and outside the capital.

As every other infantry unit in the Catalan army, the Generalitat Regiment is one battalion strong. There is a provision for a second battalion, this time formed only by fusileers (musketeers), to be formed only in the coming of war and then only by the specific consent and mandate of the Generalitat government. Its members would then be coming straight from others units which then in turn should recruit to strength again.

You can see the uniform and colours below.

About Imagi-Nations – Sobre les Imagi-Nacions.

Let me make a very little introduction to Imagi-Nations.

Imagi-Nations are, plain and simple, imaginary nations. The idea is to develop an alternative version of a real nation, or a brand new nation, with a real history based or adapted background; settled in a real world location, or one not so real but plausible enough, references to real people would mix with imaginary characters.

The origins of this concept lay in the miniature collecting and gaming world. After collecting and playing scores of historical armies, some owners started readying fictional units to play along their historical counterparts. From there to build new countries it is just a little step. And so new nations and interesting characters are born from the fertile minds of people around the world...

On army banners and standards - De les banderes i estendards de l'exèrcit.

It was settled not long ago by the generalitat as to how the different flags of the army regiments should be designed. Catalan regiments display two such main flags, called Colonel's and Battalion or Regimental, colours.

Colonel's colours are to be the same for all the regiments, showing the Catalan coat of arms, with its national emblem surrounded by a crown of laurel and surmounted by a royal crown, in its centre, over a red cross of Saint George and over a white field, and on the cantons in a reduced size. Sandwiched between the emblem and the crown, a scroll bears the numerical designation (in roman numbers) of the unit, as in “I REGIMENT”.

Battalion Colours share the use and positioning of the coats of arms and the scroll with the same designation as in Colonel's colours, but over a regimental facing colour field with no cross except for the 1st, 5th and 8th regiments. These units keep the red cross of Saint George under the Catalan coat of arms and over a facing coloured field, and the 8th regiment flag has a white saltire under the cross and over a blue field. The 1st regiment flag, being this unit a full grenadier guard unit, displays golden grenade devices on the arms of the cross.

You'll see two samples below.

On military matters - D'afers militars.

After the War for Independence, an Academy of War was founded which, directed by the Councillor of War of the Generalitat, was to keep a standing army and train its cadres. An Institute of Ordnance and an Academy for the Navy, both merchant and war, were also founded. The latter was directed by the Councillor of the Navy (from the Generalitat too) while a Mestre (master) of Ordnance was in charge of the former, chosen by the Councillor of War.

The standing army was reduced to a Guards regiment and six more line infantry regiments, three light infantry regiments, one of heavy cavalry, three of dragoons and two of hussars. Their names and uniform colours and facings followed closely the ones worn by these units in the War for Independence, although religious references were kept only informally and their official names followed assigned numbers and Colonels.

The Guards regiment was made up wholly with Granaders (grenadiers) and named after the institution it was to protect and serve, the Generalitat. Its six companies were always posted in watch duties in centers of government and key fortresses and cities. Next came the line infantry regiments, also of six companies, one of these of Granaders and the rest of Fusellers (fusileers, the name for other nation's musketeers in the Catalan army, which had no different fusileers units). Then there were three regiments of Fusellers de Muntanya (mountain fusileers, light infantry), one of this dressed and equipped like Austrian Croats.

Catalan regiments have been until now one battalion strong, with six companies each, one of these of Granaders and the rest of Fusellers. In battle, Granaders from different units can form converged grenadier battalions. Modern times have seen the Master of Infantry ask repeatedly for an increment of the armed forces, which has been granted by the newly appointed Minister of War, maybe to compensate for the upgrading of the cavalry role (see below).

The cavalry had one regiment of Cuirassers (cuirassiers, the Catalan heavy horse), three of conventional Dragons (dragoons, medium cavalry) and two of Hússars (hussars). All these units were small by standards and were to be trained in a supporting role they despised. The cavalry staff always asked for improvement on their battlefield role and this was achieved with the coming of the actual Minister of War, close acquitance of the Mestre de Cavalleria (master of cavalry), although the infantry has not lost its preponderance.

The artillery is specialized in defense, both coastal and of land fortifications. The difficult geography of the country calls for quick manouvering and sieges and so artillery tends to be less mobile and heavier. The field artillery is a small branch and contributes with small contingents to Catalan field armies, but is well trained and professional, having served in most cases for some time as ship gunners. Catalan ships on the other side tend to be full of guns; the nature of the Catalan navy is one of coastal defense and so its few ships of the line are heavy and sport a lot of firepower, in contrast with a lot of smaller warships fast enough to keep with corsairs and protect merchant ships (which in turn usually are well armed enough as to fend off pirates).

All in all every arm of the military and navy share a strong esprit de corps among their ranks and a sense of professionality and capability that makes up for their not high numbers. A fierce, sometimes ruthless attittude is also common and, if not well looked on by the high command, at least it is tolerated as a low inconvenience for a stern and aggressive behaviour in battle. Militia units on the other side are untested and matters of try and see, able both of outstanding deeds of bravery (like those of the Barcinonan Coronela back in the War for Independence) or of wavering indecision. Catalan marines and sailors are also brave people, used to the periodic clashing with Barbary pirates.

On Government - Del Govern.

It has been already said here that Catalàunia is a republic and of course no monarch is its head of state. The government resides in the General Deputation, also known as the Generalitat. A Deputy Principal acts as head of state and another deputy, the Conseller Primer or Prime (or First) Councillor, as head of government. Both are elective. There are five deputies-councillors who act as ministers of Afers del País (country, internal affairs), Afers Diplomàtics (diplomacy, external affairs), Afers del Tresor (treasure, finances affairs), Afers de la Marina (naval affairs) and Afers de la Guerra (war affairs) and six deputies more who act as Oïdors (literally, listeners) and have an auditing capacity over their respective ministries (including the prime counselor). A fourteenth member of the government, with no adjunt Oïdor, is the Secretary of State, who acts as a supervisor to the whole government and assessor to the Deputy Principal and substitutes that position if necessary.

All these deputies are elected by the Corts (courts), an assembly of the three Braços (representatives from the nobility, clergy and municipal arms or branches) from which they come from, two deputies from each branch, with the actual government. This assembly has legislative capacity and the voting of laws take precedence over the concession of taxes and subsidies to the government. Of course the imposition of any tax has to be preceded by a convocation of Courts where subsidies can too be petitioned in form of (normally) low interest loans.

The Generalitat is the executive arm of the government and also nominates the members of the Audiència General (the old, reconverted Audiència Reial, the judicial arm). Then the members of the Audiència elect their own representatives and president.

The Veguers (sheriffs) are government representatives in charge of Vegueries, territorial divisions which follow ancient traditions but were streamlined after the War for Independence. The Batlles are the majors of towns, cities and smaller municipalities which congregate into Universitats (universities, an administrative unit).
Batlles and Veguers can call for the Sometent, the militia, which acts as a police force in rural areas and is made up by the local inhabitants. In urban centers, the Coronela or urban militia has that role, with a standing minimal force supplemented by the gremial insitutions.

In Barcinona, the Consell de Cent (a municipal corporation which rivals the Generalitat in the Catalan capital) rules the city, with its own assembly and government organs. It rules also the potentially huge Barcinonan Coronela, which had a crucial role in resisting the Bourbon siege and assaults in the War for Independence.

Colonel's Colours - Bandera Coronela

I've found that other pages in the blog can't contain more than one post. So I decided to keep those pages (just Flags for the moment) to show the definitive ones and put them in normal entries until they are selected. First I'll go with Colonel's Colours.

The regimental designation (I Infantry Guards, III Line Infantry, II Light Infantry or the likes) will be inscribed on the scroll in the coat of arms. Also its form is not definitive still.

Finally, the Saint George's Cross (patron Saint to Catalàunia), the Cross has been sported by Catalan troops since medieval times and it's representative of the Catalan government.

Please comment on them, help me to decide. I'm not very keen on the last two as they are very similar to 1st Regiment's Colours. Also, the Cross without any devices, although beautiful, could be less representative as the national coat of arms is not present. Moreover the Cross will figure on each and every battalion (regiment) colour, with varying coloured backgrounds and saltires to denote the regimental facings.

Si us plau comenteu sobre les banderes i ajudeu-me a decidir.

P.S.: Sorry for the alternated translated texts but I did not want to repeat the flags and making the post excessively large.
